Castelejo
A wild west-coast beach below dark cliffs north of Cape St Vincent, picking up almost any Atlantic swell. Fun peaks on smaller days, advanced-only above head-high, and very exposed to the wind.
Castelejo is reached by driving through Vila do Bispo and following the signs down a sealed road to a car park above the beach. The cliffs around it are dark and steep, and the beach faces straight into the open Atlantic, with Cordoama just around the corner to the north-east.
The wave
A very consistent beach break that gathers swell from SW through N, with W and NW swells giving the best shape. It works from small, playful peaks up to about head-high; anything bigger turns serious.
Who it is for
Intermediates, and improvers on small, clean days. Above head-high it is advanced-only. There are rips and rocks, and the local bodyboarders are protective of the best banks, so take your turn.
When
NW swell with an E or SE wind. The beach is very exposed, so it is often blown out: check the wind early, and if it is wrong, the south coast may be cleaner. Autumn is usually best, because winter storms tend to destroy the sandbars.
