Surf
The wave at Santa Bárbara, Ribeira Grande

A long black volcanic-sand beach on the north coast of São Miguel, just west of Ribeira Grande. The main surf spot in the Azores, with a surf school on the sand and a competition history, and peaks for every level depending on size.

Santa Bárbara is a 1.2 kilometre stretch of black volcanic sand on the north coast of São Miguel, a few minutes west of Ribeira Grande. It is the centre of surfing in the Azores: there is a surf school right on the beach, and it has hosted the Portuguese national circuit and a WSL qualifying event.

The wave

Shifting beach-break peaks along the sand, exposed to North Atlantic swell so it is rarely flat. On a small clean day the inside is friendly and schools run lessons; on a bigger autumn or winter swell the outside has power and the rips pick up.

Who it is for

Everyone, at the right size. Beginners on the small days with a school, intermediates and up when there is swell. For heavier, more advanced waves you explore the reefs and points elsewhere on the north coast.

When

N to NW swell, southerly wind, low to mid tide. Consistent all year; biggest autumn to spring. Bring warm rubber and expect the weather to change through the day.
