A surf school in Machico on Madeira's east coast, listed by the island tourism board, teaching on one of the island's only real sand beaches.
Aroundfreedom is a surf school on Caminho de São Roque in Machico, on Madeira's east coast, with free parking just off exit 25 of the VR1. Its coaches have more than twelve years of experience, and the school holds a surf school licence (no. 296) and is registered as a tourism activity operator.
Where it surfs
The school sorts Madeira's breaks by level. For beginners and intermediates: São Roque beach in Machico, Alagoa and Maiata in Porto da Cruz, and Seixal. For intermediate to advanced: Fajã da Areia in São Vicente, Achadas da Cruz and Fajã do Cabo Girão. For advanced and expert surfers: Contreiras, Ribeira da Janela, Jardim do Mar, Paul do Mar, Ponta Pequena and Lugar de Baixo.
Lessons and levels
Two-hour group lessons with a maximum of six people per coach, packs of five or ten lessons, private coaching for one or for private groups of up to twelve, advanced two-hour lessons, guided surf tours of three or six hours, and a five-day advanced course with water and land sessions. Board and wetsuit are included; the demo fleet includes Firewire and Slater Designs boards. Participants must be over eight and comfortable in the sea.
Languages
Portuguese, English, French and German. The head coach is a Level 2 surf coach and a qualified surf judge.
