Baleal Surf Camp

A family-run beachfront camp on Baleal beach, describing itself as Portugal's first surf camp, with a certified surf school, rentals and hostel-to-apartment lodging.

Baleal Surf Camp was established in 1993 and describes itself as Portugal's first surf camp. Its surf school and rental station sit on the beach at Praia do Baleal Campismo, at the Cantinho da Baia spot on the north side of the Peniche peninsula, one of the more sheltered learner bays on this coast.

Lessons and levels

Beginner courses cover the basics of surfing as a sport, and the surf station teaches all levels, placing each student in a group that matches their level. There are classes for children and teens, family surf camps, and lower- and mid-season packs that combine seven nights with five lessons.

Equipment

Board and wetsuit rental on the beach, including Firewire performance boards, and an accommodation-plus-equipment option for surfers who do not need lessons.

Staying here

Hostel dorms for a budget stay and private apartments at the top end, with Bar do Bruno on the beach. The camp is registered with Turismo de Portugal and shows the Portuguese Surf Federation's badge on its site. Lisbon airport is about 90 km away.
