A cluster of cliff-backed beaches down a quiet road south of Vila Nova de Milfontes. Powerful and exposed swell magnets, for confident surfers only once there is size.

Almograve is a village on the wild Alentejo coast, with several beaches reached down tracks through the cliffs. There is nothing built on the shore and no crowd to speak of, which is the appeal and the warning.

The wave

Exposed beach-break peaks with rock and reef sections, powerful even at modest size and heavy when the swell is up. The current is strong and the water is cold year-round because of the Atlantic upwelling here.

Who it is for

Advanced surfers who are self-sufficient. This is not a place to be caught out: help is far away and the sea has weight.

When

NW to W swell, E wind, low to mid tide. Spring and autumn are the most manageable; winter is serious.
