A cliff-top village with a beach below the church and more peaks a walk in either direction. Remote, cold and lightly surfed, with exposed beach breaks that reward local knowledge.

Zambujeira do Mar is a small village perched on the cliff edge in the Alentejo natural park, with a cove beach directly below the church and a string of other beaches reached on foot along the clifftop path.

The wave

Exposed beach-break peaks in the coves, rights and lefts, with power and current. Nothing here is very forgiving, but on a clean day with the right bank it can be excellent and almost empty.

Who it is for

Intermediates and up who are comfortable reading an exposed beach and its rips. The village has a couple of small surf camps that know which cove to use on the day.

When

NW to W swell, E or NE wind, low to mid tide. Spring and autumn are best; winter is cold and heavy.
