Alvor

A fishing village on an estuary in the central Algarve, with a wide ocean beach break on one side and a tidal lagoon used for kite and wing on the other. Gentle and quiet, good for first steps in either.
Alvor sits where a shallow estuary meets the sea between Portimão and Lagos. The long ocean beach and the sheltered lagoon give it two different things to do depending on the conditions.
The surf
The ocean beach is a soft, wide beach break that needs a south or south-west swell to work and is flat a lot of the time. When it is on it is gentle and beginner-friendly, with plenty of room.
The estuary
On summer afternoons the sea breeze fills in and the flat, shallow lagoon becomes a good beginner venue for kitesurf and wing, used by schools. Mind the tidal current in the main channel.
When
Surf: autumn to spring, S to SW swell, N wind. Wind sports: summer afternoons in the estuary.
Nearby
Meia Praia
A long, sheltered sandy beach on the south coast at Lagos, gentle and shallow-gradient. A fine learner wave when the south coast has swell, which is the catch: it is flat far more than it breaks.
BeginnersAutumn to spring, and on rare summer south swellsPraia da Rocha
Portimão's long town beach, about 1.5 km of sand below the Santa Catarina fortress, with gentle beach-break peaks on small swells. On a solid south-west swell a hollow left runs off the breakwater at the river mouth.

A small bay south of Raposeira with one of the heaviest waves in the Algarve: a fast, hollow right that peels off the rocks at the west end. On winter swells it is for experienced surfers; in summer the beach is often knee-high.
