Praia da Rocha

Surf
The wave at Praia da Rocha, Portimao

Portimao's long town beach, about 1.5 km of sand below the Santa Catarina fortress, with gentle beach-break peaks on small swells. On a solid south-west swell a hollow left runs off the breakwater at the river mouth.

Praia da Rocha is the big resort beach of Portimao, around 1.5 km of sand backed by hotels and apartments. At its eastern end, the 17th-century Fortaleza de Santa Catarina still guards the mouth of the Arade river, beside the long breakwater that frames the entrance.

The wave

Most of the beach is a gentle beach break with lefts and rights, small and easy on most days. On a solid S to SW swell a hollow left forms off the breakwater, the wave most surfers come here for.

Who it is for

The beach suits everyone, including beginners when it is small. The breakwater left is best left to experienced surfers: it is crowded when it works and breaks near the rocks.

When

The south coast needs a S to SW swell, so it is flat on most summer days. A N or NE wind blows offshore, and mid tide is usually the pick. Winter brings the most reliable days. Parking near the breakwater is paid and fills up fast when the surf is on, and the water can be polluted after heavy rain.
