Praia da Barra

The beach where the Ria de Aveiro meets the Atlantic, organised by a 500-metre breakwater at the port entrance. Quality banks on a west swell, and it can hold clean in a light north wind when the neighbours are blown out.
Praia da Barra is in Gafanha da Nazare, in the municipality of Ilhavo, where the Ria de Aveiro lagoon opens to the sea. A breakwater runs about 500 metres out, marking the southern side of the Aveiro port entrance, with the Barra lighthouse standing behind the beach. Praia da Meia Laranja lies north of the wall, Barra beach proper to the south, and Costa Nova further down the coast.
The wave
An exposed beach break with lefts and rights, shaped by the breakwater that organises the swell and the sandbars. It needs a bit more swell than the beaches around it, and works best on a W swell of moderate size.
Who it is for
Intermediates, and improvers on small days with the surf school on the beach. It gets crowded when it works. Rip currents run along the breakwater: stay clear of the wall and the channel.
When
W groundswell with an E wind. The breakwater can keep it slightly offshore in a light north wind, which helps when other spots are blown out. Winter is the season. Free parking, lifeguards and a surf shop are on hand.
