The beach of a quiet resort village on the long sandy coast south of Aveiro, with friendly banks that suit learners. Rarely crowded, but very exposed to the wind.

Praia de Mira, also known as Praia da Barrinha, sits at the southern end of a small summer resort village on the long, straight sandy coast between Aveiro and Figueira da Foz. Out of season it is very quiet.

The wave

A sandbar beach break with lefts and rights. The banks hold only so much swell, from about knee-high to head-high, so bigger days quickly become too much. Waves come about equally from local windswell and distant groundswell.

Who it is for

Beginners and improvers, with a surf school, lifeguards and camping by the beach. It is rarely crowded, even when the surf is up.

When

NW to W swell with an E wind. The beach catches plenty of wind, so timing matters more than at sheltered spots: go early. A rising tide is usually best; around high tide it turns into shorebreak, and at low tide it mushes out on banks far offshore.
