Sao Torpes
A long sand beach just south of Sines, with its best peaks against the jetty at the north end, sheltered from the summer north wind. Gentle for learners on small days, hollow and fast on a solid swell.
Sao Torpes is a long stretch of fine, golden sand at the northern edge of the Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina natural park, about 6 km from Sines. It takes its name from Saint Torpes, a Christian martyr whose body, the story goes, washed up on this beach; a stone marker nearby remembers him.
The water here had a reputation for being warmer than the rest of the coast, thanks to the cooling outflow of the Sines coal power station. The plant shut down in 2021, so expect normal Atlantic temperatures now.
The wave
A beach break with lefts and rights along the sand. The prime section is the north end against the jetty, which is sheltered from the north wind: a fast left breaks on the north side of the breakwater, and on a bigger, offshore swell a hollow right forms a little way down the beach.
Who it is for
Everyone, depending on the day. Summer is mostly learners, with a surf school and lifeguards on the beach. The right on a solid swell is for upper intermediate and advanced surfers.
When
SW to NW swell with a NE wind, working through low and mid tide by the jetty. Free parking, camping and showers are close by. Sines is the practical base for food and beds.
