Southwest Alentejo
Costa Vicentina

The wild southwest, from Vila Nova de Milfontes down to Odeceixe, inside a natural park with almost nothing built on it. Powerful, exposed beach breaks reached down dirt tracks and cliff paths, swell magnets that pick up anything in the water. Remote, cold current, few crowds, no lifeguards on most of it. Coverage here is light for now.
Towns
Sines
A working port town at the top of the Costa Vicentina. Praia de São Torpes, about 6 km south, is a long sand beach with its best peaks by the jetty, sheltered from the summer north wind: easy for learners on small days, hollow on a solid swell. More exposed peaks run along the Costa Norte beach to the north.
SurfVila Nova de Milfontes
The main town on the southwest coast, at the mouth of the Mira river, with a sheltered estuary beach for learners and heavier open breaks nearby.
SurfAlmograve
A cluster of cliff-backed beaches down a quiet road south of Milfontes, powerful and exposed, for confident surfers only on size.
SurfZambujeira do Mar
A small village on the cliff edge with a beach below the church and more breaks a walk in either direction. Remote, cold water, few people.
SurfOdeceixe
Where the Seixe river meets the sea on the Alentejo/Algarve border, with a river-mouth beach that suits beginners at low tide and open surf on the sea side.
SurfArrifana
A cliff-ringed bay near Aljezur, partly sheltered by a headland and a rock stack, which makes it one of the more forgiving spots on an otherwise heavy stretch of coast.
SurfCarrapateira
A small village in the Aljezur hills between two of the best-known surf beaches in the south-west, Bordeira and Amado, both inside the Costa Vicentina natural park.

Common questions
- Is the Costa Vicentina for experienced surfers only?
- Mostly. The beach breaks are powerful and exposed with strong currents and few lifeguards. Arrifana is the exception, partly sheltered by a headland, and has schools; Odeceixe and Milfontes have sheltered river-mouth banks for lessons.
- When is the best time to go?
- Spring and autumn: the swell is manageable, the water is not at its coldest, and the natural park is quiet. Winter is powerful and cold; summer can be windy in the afternoons.
