Regions
Algarve
Portugal's south coast trades the Atlantic's raw power for sheltered bays, warmer water and long light-wind days. Sagres on the western tip still catches serious swell, Lagos and Alvor suit learners, and the eastern lagoons around Fuseta are quiet flat-water kite territory. Coverage here is lighter for now and will grow.
Towns
Lagos
A harbour town on the south coast with the long sheltered sand of Meia Praia, gentle and good for learning.
SurfKitesurfAlvor
A fishing village on an estuary, with an ocean beach break and a tidal lagoon used for kite and wing.
SurfKitesurfWindsurfPortimão
A resort town on the central Algarve. The long city beach at Praia da Rocha and the coves west of it catch the gentle, warm south-coast swell, and the town is the transport hub for the whole area.
SurfVila do Bispo
The quiet market town behind Cape St Vincent, with roads down to the wild west-coast beaches of Castelejo and Cordoama and the south-coast coves around Zavial.
SurfSagres
The southwestern tip of Portugal, where you can pick a beach on the south or west coast depending on wind and swell.
SurfWindsurfFuseta
A quiet town in the Ria Formosa lagoon on the eastern Algarve, flat shallow water and steady thermal wind for kite and wing.

Alvor
A fishing village on an estuary in the central Algarve, with a wide ocean beach break on one side and a tidal lagoon used for kite and wing on the other. Gentle and quiet, good for first steps in either.
BeginnersAutumn to spring for surf; summer thermal wind for the estuaryBeliche
A cliff-ringed beach between Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente, reached by a long stairway. More exposed and more powerful than Tonel, with a fast, hollow wave for confident surfers.
Advanced surfersAutumn to springCastelejo
A wild west-coast beach below dark cliffs north of Cape St Vincent, picking up almost any Atlantic swell. Fun peaks on smaller days, advanced-only above head-high, and very exposed to the wind.
IntermediatesAutumn, before winter storms flatten the banksCordoama
A long, open beach of white sand below high cliffs next to Castelejo, with powerful beach-break peaks that can get hollow. Reliable on NW groundswell, but exposed to the wind.
IntermediatesAutumn; struggles in the big winter swellsFuseta (Ria Formosa)
A shallow, flat lagoon inside the Ria Formosa barrier islands, with a dependable summer sea breeze and warm water. One of the easiest places in Portugal to learn to kite or wing.
BeginnersJune to September for the steady afternoon windMareta
The south-facing town beach at Sagres, tucked out of the west wind and swell. Gentle and forgiving, the main learner wave in Sagres and the go-to when the west coast is too big or too windy.
BeginnersAutumn to spring for swell; sheltered enough to surf on windy west-coast daysMartinhal
A sheltered bay just east of Sagres where the summer north wind blows offshore across flat water: one of the few windsurfing spots in the western Algarve. Hardly ever any surf, and that is the point.
All levelsSummer afternoons, when the nortada blowsMeia Praia
A long, sheltered sandy beach on the south coast at Lagos, gentle and shallow-gradient. A fine learner wave when the south coast has swell, which is the catch: it is flat far more than it breaks.
BeginnersAutumn to spring, and on rare summer south swellsPraia da Rocha
Portimão's long town beach, about 1.5 km of sand below the Santa Catarina fortress, with gentle beach-break peaks on small swells. On a solid south-west swell a hollow left runs off the breakwater at the river mouth.
All levelsWinter for the jetty left; small and easy most of the summerTonel
The west-facing beach at Sagres, a short walk from town. Far more exposed than the south-coast beaches, so it holds swell when everywhere sheltered is flat, but it is powerful and shifty.
IntermediatesAutumn to spring; the west coast is biggest and cleanest thenZavial
A small bay south of Raposeira with one of the heaviest waves in the Algarve: a fast, hollow right that peels off the rocks at the west end. On winter swells it is for experienced surfers; in summer the beach is often knee-high.

Common questions
- Is the Algarve reliable for surf?
- Less than the west coast. The south-facing coast can go flat for days in summer, which is why schools drive to the exposed west-coast beaches around Sagres and Aljezur when it does.
- Is the water warmer than the rest of Portugal?
- On the south coast, yes, up to 21 to 23 degrees in summer. Sagres on the exposed western tip runs colder because of coastal upwelling, so treat it as west coast.
- Do I need a car?
- Close to essential. The surf beaches are spread out and poorly served by public transport; being able to move between the south and west coasts with the wind is the whole point of an Algarve trip.
