Lagos

A harbour town on the south coast with the long sheltered sand of Meia Praia, gentle and good for learning.
Lagos is a harbour and resort town on the western Algarve, better known for its cliffs and beaches than its surf, but a comfortable base with warm water, light wind and a lot of sun.
Where to surf, by level
Meia Praia is the main learner wave: a long, open, gently sloping sand beach on the east side of town that picks up south and south-west swell and the larger winter swells that wrap round the coast. It is forgiving and rarely crowded. Porto de Mós and the beaches west of town give a little more shape on the right conditions.
The honest caveat: the south-facing Algarve coast is far less consistent than the west coast and can go flat for days in summer. When that happens the schools drive clients 30 to 45 minutes to the exposed west-coast beaches around Sagres and Aljezur, which almost always have something.
When to go
Autumn to spring for the best chance of south-coast swell. Summer is warm and reliable for lessons even when small. Water runs about 18 to 21 in summer and 15 to 17 in winter, the warmest on this list.
Getting there
Lagos is the end of the Algarve train line; from Faro it is about an hour and 40 by train, or an hour by car. Faro airport is the nearest.
