FreeRide Surfing

A surf school and camp in Sagres since 2002, with a year-round surf centre at the Memmo Baleeira hotel and a beach hut at Praia da Cordoama from June to November.
FreeRide Surfing has run in Sagres since 2002. Its surf centre and shop are at the Memmo Baleeira hotel above the harbour, open all year, and from June to November a beach hut also runs at Praia da Cordoama on the west coast. Around Sagres there are mellow beginner beaches and more powerful waves within a short drive, which is what makes the area good for progressing.
Lessons and levels
Group and private lessons split into beginner, intermediate and advanced, in small groups, plus surf guiding with local guides and advanced coaching. A short guide on the site helps you choose the right lesson.
Surf and stay
A Surf and Stay package combines lessons and accommodation, and there are surf camp weekends. Boards and wetsuits are available to rent at the surf centre.
Instructors
Certified local instructors, and at least one coach also speaks German and Dutch. The company is registered as a tourism activity operator (RNAAT).
Spots nearby
Beliche
A cliff-ringed beach between Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente, reached by a long stairway. More exposed and more powerful than Tonel, with a fast, hollow wave for confident surfers.
Advanced surfersAutumn to springMareta
The south-facing town beach at Sagres, tucked out of the west wind and swell. Gentle and forgiving, the main learner wave in Sagres and the go-to when the west coast is too big or too windy.
BeginnersAutumn to spring for swell; sheltered enough to surf on windy west-coast daysMartinhal
A sheltered bay just east of Sagres where the summer north wind blows offshore across flat water: one of the few windsurfing spots in the western Algarve. Hardly ever any surf, and that is the point.
