Agucadoura

A sand-bottom beach break north of Povoa de Varzim with lefts and rights for every level. Regular surf, moderate crowds, and a working village behind the dunes.
Agucadoura is a village on the coast north of Povoa de Varzim, about 5 km south of Apulia. Locals still gather sargaco, seaweed dried and used as fertiliser, though less than they once did. Offshore, a floating wind turbine was tested here from 2011 to 2016, the first of its kind in the Iberian Peninsula.
The wave
A beach break over sand, with lefts and rights usually 50 to 150 metres long. Surf comes through regularly, and the banks suit every level on the right day.
Who it is for
Everyone. Beginners on the small days, with intermediates and up when a solid swell fills in. Crowds are moderate. Povoa's own town break further south is a shallow reef and much more serious.
When
W to NW swell of at least 2 feet, with an E or SE wind. Low to mid tide is the usual window, and locals tend to skip it at full tide. Free parking near the beach.
