Leca da Palmeira

A beach break just north of Leixoes harbour, beside Alvaro Siza's famous tidal pools. Exposed to every west swell, with barrels on offshore mornings and a hard paddle when it is big.
Leca da Palmeira faces Matosinhos across the port of Leixoes, on the north side of the harbour. Its seafront is known for the Piscina das Mares, the saltwater pools Alvaro Siza built into the rocks between 1959 and 1973, and for the Boa Nova lighthouse, the second-tallest in Portugal.
The wave
An exposed beach break that usually has waves and works year-round. The sandbars pick up swell from S through NW, best from the W. On offshore mornings the banks can throw barrels, and big winter storms make it come alive.
Who it is for
Intermediates and up. Matosinhos beach across the harbour is the gentler learner option. Leca has rocks along the shore, strong currents in a big swell, and a difficult paddle out. Water quality can be poor, especially after rain.
When
W swell with an E wind, ideally early before the sea breeze. It works through the tide, with the push often better. Expect a crowd, many of them bodyboarders, when it is good. There are lifeguards, showers and paid parking.
