Matosinhos

Porto's home beach, a metro ride from the city, with a long sandy stretch between two harbour walls and a busy scene of surf schools. Sheltered and forgiving at the south end.
Matosinhos is the wide city beach just north of Porto, reachable by metro and lined with restaurants. It is the busiest learner beach on the northern coast and where most people from Porto had their first surf.
The wave
A forgiving beach break, softest near the southern harbour wall which shelters it from swell and some wind, punchier and more exposed toward the north. On a small clean day it is close to ideal for lessons.
Who it is for
Beginners and improvers, with a wall of surf schools working the sand. Stronger surfers use the north end or move to the reefs and beach breaks further down the coast on a bigger swell.
When
W to NW swell, E wind, mid tide. It is rideable all year; the water is cold and a good wetsuit matters, especially in winter.
