Foz do Arelho

Where the Óbidos lagoon meets the Atlantic: an open ocean beach break on one side and a flat, shallow lagoon for kite and windsurf on the other. A two-in-one spot backed by a big car park.
Foz do Arelho is the mouth of the Óbidos lagoon, north of Peniche. The setup is unusual: step one way off the car park and you are on an exposed Atlantic beach, step the other and you are on a warm, flat, waist-deep lagoon.
The surf
The ocean beach is a straightforward beach break, all levels on a small clean day, with more power and stronger current when the swell is up. It is exposed and often windy, so it works best early or on a light offshore.
The lagoon
On a summer afternoon the thermal wind fills in and the lagoon becomes a safe, flat-water playground for kitesurf, windsurf and wing, popular with schools and beginners because there is nothing to hit.
When
Surf: autumn to spring, W to NW swell, E wind. Wind sports: summer afternoons on the lagoon.
