The wave at Cantinho da Baia, Peniche

Beach break · Peniche, Silver Coast

Cantinho da Baia

The most sheltered corner of the Baleal bay, tucked against the Peniche side. Small, soft and forgiving, and the spot most Peniche schools use for a first lesson. Rarely flat.

Surf

Cantinho da Baia sits in the south-east corner of the wide bay between Peniche and Baleal, where the headland blocks the north wind and knocks the size down. The result is a small, gentle beach break that works on almost any swell and stays rideable when the exposed spots are too big or too windy.

This is the classic Peniche beginner wave. On a clean summer morning the inside fills with surf schools; it is busy but low-consequence, sandy-bottomed and slow. As you progress, the peaks a little further out give a bit more push.

The one hazard is the rocks at the far eastern end of the beach, near the Peniche side. Stay on the sand in the middle and it is about as safe as a surf spot gets on this coast.
