Peniche & Baleal
The whole peninsula in one guide: why Peniche works almost year-round, where Supertubos and Baleal fit, and how locals pick a spot by the day's wind and tide.
Peniche isn't one wave, it's a peninsula, and that's the whole point. Swell and wind hit it from different sides depending on the day, so when one spot is blown out, another twenty minutes away is often firing. It's the reason Peniche works almost year-round, not luck.
Supertubos
Supertubos is the name people know, a heavy, hollow beach break that's hosted World Tour events for a reason. Not a beginner wave. If you're still finding your feet, this isn't the place to start; it breaks fast and close to shore, and it punishes hesitation.
Baleal
Baleal is the other side of the coin. The north-facing beach, sheltered and softer, is where most surf schools actually teach, a proper learning wave without the crowd or consequence of Supertubos. At low tide, Baleal connects to the mainland by a sandbar; at high tide it's technically an island. Locals plan sessions around that tide window as much as the swell.
The breaks in between
Between the two sits a string of lesser-known breaks, Molhe Leste, Lagide, Prainha, that locals rotate through depending on wind direction. This is where having an actual guide, not a "top 10" list, matters: knowing which one's working on a given day is half the game.
When to go
Autumn through spring generally brings the biggest, most consistent swell. Summer is smaller and more forgiving, better for beginners, worse if you're chasing size. But thanks to the peninsula's shape, there's rarely a day with genuinely nothing rideable somewhere nearby.
After the session
A few local names people rate around Peniche and Baleal: Tugos, Ponto de Encontro, Bar do Cerro, Sol, Doce Dia. This list is being built out with places we'd actually send a friend.
