Lagide

A long, mellow left-hand reef on the Baleal side of the peninsula, popular with longboarders and improvers. One of the more forgiving reef waves on this coast and a natural step up from the Baleal beach break.
Lagide breaks off the low rocky shelf between Baleal and Almagreira, on the north side of the Peniche peninsula. It is a left, and by the standards of the reefs on this coast it is a gentle one.
The wave
A peeling left wall over flat rock, long and fairly predictable, that runs down the reef toward the beach. It rarely gets truly heavy and it holds shape from small up to a few feet overhead. That combination makes it a favourite of longboarders and of surfers moving off the beach break for the first time.
Who it is for
Confident intermediates and up. It is forgiving for a reef, but it is still a reef: the rock is flat and covered in urchins, shallow at low tide, and a leash failure means a walk over it.
When
NW to W swell, E or SE wind, tide from low to mid. Busy on a good longboard day.

- What kind of wave is Lagide?
- Lagide is a reef break. It wants NW to W; works from small to overhead swell and works best with offshore from the e / se wind.
- Is Lagide good for beginners?
- Not for a first session. It's rated intermediate — better once you can paddle out and read a line-up on your own.
- When's the best time for Lagide?
- Autumn to spring, but rideable much of the year.
- What should I watch out for at Lagide?
- Flat rock and urchins on the reef, especially at low tide, and a longboard-heavy crowd that can make the peak busy.
