São João da Caparica

The northern end of Costa da Caparica, where a line of groynes shapes the sandbanks and most of the area's surf schools operate. Sheltered from the north wind, so it is a key summer option near Lisbon.
São João is the first stretch of Costa da Caparica as you come from the bridge, marked by a run of rock groynes built to hold the sand. Those groynes make the sandbanks, and the banks make this the most reliable part of Caparica for a consistent wave.
The wave
Beach-break peaks between the groynes, rights and lefts, gentle on a small day and punchier with size. The banks just up-drift of each groyne are often the pick.
Who it is for
Everyone. This is the school heart of Caparica, so beginners are well served, and intermediates get a workable wave when a bigger swell lines up with an offshore.
Its value near Lisbon
The cliffs behind block the north wind, so when the nortada is wrecking the open west coast in summer, São João is frequently still clean. That, plus the ferry-and-bus access, makes it Lisbon's summer fallback.
When
W to SW swell, E wind, low to mid tide.
