The surf spots of Peniche

Peniche juts far enough into the Atlantic to catch swell from almost any direction, and that shape is the whole story: when the wind ruins one side, another beach twenty minutes away is often clean. That is why Peniche has surf on more days of the year than almost anywhere else in Portugal, and why a list of spots matters more here than a single "best wave".

The beginner spots

Cantinho da Baia, the sheltered south-east corner of the Baleal bay, is where most schools give a first lesson: small, sandy, slow, and rarely flat. The wider Praia do Baleal shares the bay and gives a bit more shape as you progress. Prainha, a small cove nearer Peniche town, also works for early days.

The step up

Molhe Leste, by the harbour wall, holds a heavier beach-break peak when there is size and is a common intermediate progression from Baleal. Lagide, over at Ferrel, is a left over rock that is gentle for a reef and a good introduction to reef surfing. The north side of Consolacao, a sheltered bay 5 km south of town, is a forgiving sand beach that stays clean when the nortada is blowing everything else out.

The advanced and expert waves

Supertubos is the one people know: a fast, hollow, board-breaking beach break on the exposed south shore that has hosted the World Surf League Championship Tour for years. It breaks close to shore and does not forgive hesitation -- watch it before you paddle out. The rocky right at the south end of Consolacao is a long, workable reef wave, also for experienced surfers only, with an awkward entry over the rocks.

Picking a spot on the day

Small and clean, or learning: Cantinho da Baia or Baleal. A north wind wrecking the coast: Consolacao, or the sheltered Baleal corner. A clean west or south-west swell with an offshore easterly and you can handle power: Supertubos. Reef curious: Lagide. The peninsula almost always has an answer -- a local guide or a surf-school check-in beats guessing.
